I had a crappie break me off last spring. I cast back to the same spot and caught the fish...with the first jig still in its mouth. Only time I ever did that with a crappie that I remember. Have done it a few times with bass and catfish.
Caught a Bass once that was "passing" a rusting worm hook ... caught a Crappie once that had a "rusty outline" impression of a hook on the outside of its stomach area scales ... and caught several different species of fish with hooks still stuck in their mouths. None of them were especially "large" fish, either, nor were they "unhealthy" looking ... as though the hooks were an impediment to their ability to feed/thrive.
I caught one just yesterday actually, this bass had a crank air in its mouth. I've only done it one other time, catching a big smallmouth bass with a tube in its mouth

Was on a trip out of Ponce Inlet on a sport boat and a buddy caught an 87lb black grouper that had a hook, leader and clip from a longline boat.still in his jaw. Dont know how it managed to break off from the mainline of one of them but he did somehow. Have caught several catfish with hooks in them.
Caught a catfish once with 5 hooks in his mouth counting mine. He was hungry.

Actually too many times to count. When you have size limits, it happens pretty often.
Here is a photo of a Catfish I caught with a jig coming out of his rectum a few years back. But I was Catfishing at the time .
