Using artificials only is limiting them. Using spinning tackle only is limiting them. Casting only is limiting them. Variety is the spice of life, and it helps your overall fishing ability, too.

In our 2500 acre lake we only have a large population of Channel Cats...ours is a Shad driven lake. Channels follow schools of shad and hunt and feed, they will hit any artificial that moves...of all Cats, Channels are the easiest to use Artificials with.
Most of the kids that I teach, have already been exposed to Live Bait fishing....they learn how to bottom bounce, lift and drop, and variations of swimming retrieves. Most come back wanting to learn how to drop-shot, and all the different State riggings. And we do not limit them to 1 species, they learn all the patterns of various species, so they can determine what they hunt. Several of them have also helped with the yearly cover drops and other lake projects like trash pick-up!

My son at 14, and most of his friends, are way more advanced fishermen than I was at their age...and they are way more advanced (technique wise) than most adults!
We want to keep kids out of trouble and give them an outlet....keeping them involved in fishing and challenging them, is surely a benefit in the long run! We see grades improve, involvement in other activities, and overall mental improvements and a sense of self worth....just by challenging them to success.

Most of my fishing buddies, don't want to go out and fish with the kids anymore...first of all, the kids catch fish...and secondly, kids can talk more "smack" than us!
I enjoy going out and watching them excel...even if they put a smackdown on the teacher......

Some people just enjoy the "Art" of artificial fishing, and all that goes with it...some people want something else...For me, fishing artificials is cheaper, easier, and I still catch all kinds of fish all year long!
We don't agree on much, but I couldn't have said it better.

Yep, ALOT of ponds in Ohio, and ALOT of rivers and streams....But I'm lucky for being in the North, I have a 2500 acre pond less than 10 minutes from my house, 2 main rivers 15 minutes on either side of me, a 7500 acre lake about 45 minutes away, The Ohio River 1.5 hrs away, a 11,500 acre lake 1.5 hr away, and of course Lake Erie about 2.5+ hrs away.

I am a single Father, my 14 year old son is my World...as I'm sure your kids, Grandkids, and great Grandkids are.

Actually, you can trim their toenails and git different actions.. I also have a life supply of jigs. Most are shiny new in their birth plastic. Most are from members here. I have my favorites.

Time and age are my only limiters. Neither are on my side.
