As for long lining , I usually pull cranks around 150' back. I put something like a bobber stop at 150' so I know where I'm at.
    Hope this helps.
If the counter isnt right you have either too much or not enough line on the spool. It counts by revolutions of the spool. It doesnt measure the line. If you read 40 on the reel but have 50 ft. of line out you need more line on the spool.

You are right Wilbur. I only pull divers on the d.c. reels. As long as they are all the same , I don't worry about accuracy that much. I can see my diver on sonar so as long as I have them reading collectively the same , I'm good. They will all be at the same depth.

I agree about the Gander Mountain rods. I have 4 of them and they all say on them that they are planer board rods. I also have 2 Diawa line counter reels SG17LC3B and ordered 2 Diawa 17LC5 last week which are almost identical to the SG17LC3B and are on sale right now at Cabelas. 89.99 each. Both reels weigh 12.9 ounces and work well with the Gander Mountain rods. We are limited here in Pennsylvania to 3 rods per person.

When you say "diver" are you referring to crankbaits? What kind of sonar are using that lets see your crankbaits that far behind the boat?

I use diving planers with a leader of 8' or so.
I can see the planer on hds-8.
The planer lets me use anything from jigs or shallow cranks or diving cranks or other very successful baits.

Okay, I know very little about planer boards guess that should be something I look into. Is there a big learning curve on getting them to work right? I'm just getting set up to pull cranks and long line jigs, how many diver do you usually run at a time and what is the brand name that you recommend.

No real learning curve. Very simple to operate. I have pulled as many as 10. But mostly I'll stick with 8.

As far as brand name, I have a few sea strikers, some homemade divers and a few 5oz. Crescent sinkers. It basically boils down to depth control. The sinkers are the most economical.

Great info wicklundrh. As I was reading the posts I kept thinking wouldn't line diameter have and effect on the reels?

Pop .... "Trolling" is a technique name, and long lining is but one form of that technique. If you have baits in the water and the boat is moving under power ... you're "trolling". But, then you can break it down into sub-categories of longline, planer board, pushing/pulling, side pulling, spider rigging, etc. to further explain what form of trolling you're engaged in.

So yeah, long lining IS trolling ... but trolling is more than just long lining.
