It all depends on the lake you fish. Depth is relative to the body of water. I fish a shallow lake with average depth less than 8' in summer. I have hundreds of condos of different types. Some are on humps , channel drops , and some are out on flats where Crappie chase shad in as little as 4' of water. I place cover where natural cover is sparce and know holds fish. I find a large stump that is good , it will get ringed with stake beds of some kind most often. Sometimes a flat with a 2' contour change can be a hotspot to add cover. I like to keep mine small but if it holds lots of fish , I will move out 75 to 100' each direction on same contour line add another. If that works I repeat till I've covered the whole length of that contour. Sometimes I wind up with 10 to 12 beds in a row and I call them milk runs. Start at one end hitting each one . Saves running all over looking for fish at times. Nice when you can use trolling motor going to each spot in succession.

I have seen a couple of articles lately about using an indoor/outdoor thermometer with a long probe for outside temperatures....have you tried that?

I put Christmas trees in 6-12 fow. Scattered these in 10-20fow put these 12' bamboo trees in 25-30 fow mixed with some cypress trees. This gives the fish different staging areas for different times of the year. Plus I have good cover for bait fish. I went back and added some of these this year. The crappie are starting to come in pretty good. This was a three. Year project.

You say that like its a bad thing lol

Does take a lot of educated `guess` work out of it...

does anybody have trouble with beavers dragging there brush away, i,v buried brush with 2 concrete blocks and would come back a few weeks later and it would all be gone
