Default Boat Fire Extinguishers, Have you checked yours lately?

Had a few things small things to pickup yesterday (Saturday morning) while I was waiting for Marine Repair Center install my new fish finder.

The local coast guard auxiliary was at Bass Pro. They were talking about safety, boat inspections and helping folks get fitted for life vests. They weren't drawing a very big crowd when I was there. We talked a little about life vests those fancy self inflate ones. Then they asked me if I had checked my fire extinguisher lately. I told them that I check it before I get into the boat each time. Its been in the boat since I got the boat new in 2008. Well they told me that most expired within 10 years or less. Got me to thinking that's a cheap investment if your in the middle of a lake and can't swim very good.

So I picked up a new larger one rated for boats the one that came with our Lowes boat might put out a fire in a coffee cup. Yeah most of us don't think of those sort of things unless you need one. I should had realized that they do expire after my years being a volunteer fireman. So as we start the summer boating season remember to check your fire extinguishers.

Good idea. Just got a new one for the house. Did t have one here yet. Been moved since weekend before Christmas and never thought about until I got a new BBQ grill and was using it the other day. Then I realized we didn't have one here yet. We do now. Now need to check the boats.

Thank you! Well I also need to check the ones in our RV too! One point on the new one that I got for the boat yesterday I was reading on the outside of the box where it was good for 10 years. I know when I used to sell fireworks that we would have to call in someone to inspect them every year. And I would usually pull out my personal ones and pay the guy to check them out.

I always keep mine in check after I had to use one a few years back when my motor caught on fire on the way back to the ramp from duck hunting.

Well the point of this whole post was hey if a ex-volunteer fireman has a stupid moment of not checking his. Maybe I should post something so I might make someone else think about it too. I am by far not the smartest rock around but as school gets out for the summer some of you will be having the kids and wife riding with you. And Slab made this site to promote a community of folks who enjoy the love of Crappie Fishing. And he has stated to me that he is very much into fishing but also doing it in a safe manner. Last thing anyone wants to hear about is one of our members getting hurt while out enjoying what we all love to do best!

Reminders are always good. Especially when they don't involve an incident.
thanks for the reminder. I didn't think about the 10 yr. thing.

Great reminder. I was reminded a few years back when a boater had an engine fire in the no wake zone at "W" bridge ramp. Another reminder is to know where your battery cutoff switch is or get one installed. This guy had no clue about his boat and it was smoking from under the cowl, I motored over and could smell it was electrical so I told him to cut the power and get his ex ready. He had no clue of anything on his own boat, short story long I had to board the boat and disconnect power and put out the fire, thankfully my ex was still good. So get to know your equipment and be prepared it may save your boat and your life.
