That's a good idea but I'm a little old fashioned in that I want it on paper. I'd like to be able to put my hands on it....

I still log most trips in my fathers fishing diary.. First entry was in april 1952. Dads diary is mostly stories but cover weather, baits and bites as well as anything else he thought about. My most cherished one is his story about my first fishing trip (I was a little over 3). Its not a true fishing log but is sure fun to read. I usually log a dozen or so trips per year have continued his format. Probably the neatest thing is my Niece was taken fishing by her grandpa and many pages later her son was taken by his uncle (me). My younger sisters first trip is there as are all three of her daughters first trips with grandpa and my goal this summer is to log all seven of the nieces and nephews.

My fishing log is now kept on a tablet PC has pictures and all sorts of neat stuff. Date,Time, Temp, Barometric Pressure, Wind Speed and Direction, GPS Coords, all done with a simple tap on the screen pics are easy to include as are notes if I feel like it.

But journal sounds like something my 8 yr old daughter does.....

I'm gonna call it a log, maybe even the "captains log"

I wish I knew how many I have started over the years, and I surely wish yall have more dedication than I do. My father kept a dayly journal for years every day he would put a few lines about the weather and what ever he did that day be it work fishing hunting etc etc. I have them all and one day will be able to read through them with out tearing up....... some day

I use this site as my log. I go back in my post history. I also go to my files on fishing photos. It has the date and time when the pictures were taken.

That's right don't you work in a place that turns logs to paper. Now I can see how writing in a journal would seem like a log to you.(a pressed, bleached, stretched log)

I like the "captains log". That sounds real official.

Seriously it all gets back to what is important to you as an angler - what would help you to catch more fish consistently. I have a database of fishing trips dating back to the late 80's and in reviewing them over time it strikes me that the lake or river itself has changed. At the very least it provides a basis and a record of past success which can become a starting point for future success. So in the "captains log" record things that make sense to you. If weather, pre-front, post-front, water temp, clarity, level if the lake or river fluctuates, jig colors, depth they seem to be that day all can play a part in it. I tend to equate water temp with season and the depth they seem to be that day but that's just me rambling.

Thinking on starting a log book to keep up with my catch and conditions. May try to record the whether conditions every day to keep up with whether we're on a warming spell or post front conditions etc....

I know it will take some discipline to keep it up but should be worth it in the end...
Now I think they have smart phone apps that can do that for you. These are pretty useful if you stay on top of it. When I lived in Montana, Fish and Wildlife handed out log books to anglers and then had them hand those back in at the end of the year. You recorded things like weather, water conditions, fish caught/size, etc. On another forum I was on in Montana they had one that was a link to a Google Group that had an Excel spreadsheet. This was on an icefishing forum and you would go in there after a fishing trip and put in the body of water you were on and the thickness of the ice along with the date you were there. This was VERY useful since many of the lakes were a couple hours outside of town. Maybe someone who is tech savvy and has the ambition can get something like that going.
