Because I need one. If I can't find something styrofoam and have to improvise, are there any materials I should avoid?

Ice chest is the way to go, can mount an air pump to it and you will be good to go.

An ice chest would be great, but I can't find one small enough. My 5-gallon bucket is square (10" x 10") and the standard minnow bucket won't fit all the way into it. It's quite a climb down to my fishing hole, and those minners splashing all over doesn't make it any easier. But I love the square bucket. I took off the handle, drilled out the holes, and replaced it with a short bungy cord. I can carry it when it's empty, or wear it over my shoulder when it's full of fish. The flat side of the bucket keeps it from bouncing around as much against my back.

He is referring to the Engel but I honestly didn't think you were looking for something that big. Mine holds a lot of water and full prolly weighs over 60 pounds, pump sux by the way. Got an air supply in my boat. When closed and latched it will leak very little water even if turn upside down.

Rees has fished with me a couple of times lately and brought his Engel. I'm sold on them, love it. They are very nice bait coolers, but the one he has is 30qts and not something you would want to lug about on a bank fishing expedition. They do make smaller ones, I'm sure you can find them on line but be ready to spend some $$$$

Thank you, John, but you are right. It's way bigger than what I can manage. And I'm not going to haul a pump around, so I can't see spending the money on an Engel.

Here's a thought--can I just keep the minnows in the 5-gal bucket? I'm not worried about them living to see another day.

Yep and Lowes has a screw on lid for five gallon buckets to that will seal it so it wont be spilling out on you. I will take a pic of a seven gallon bucket I have set up to haul bait to put in my vat at the house, works well and the pump is not hard to deal with just don't get one like is on the Engel coolers.

Both let it go and it will die. Dependent upon how many minners ya need a six pack hard cooler may be the ticket. For 20-30 bucks you can get the cooler and an air pump. Maybe 5-10lbs. Should hold 3 or 4 dozen
