Default My Last Hoorah for Spring 2014

The weather is starting to warm up so it is about time for me to wind up my crappie fishing until this Fall. I headed out for Lake Talquin Thursday morning and was on the water right at sunrise. It was a little bit chilly but a beautiful day to be on the water.

Quickhook and the partner in crime was also out there terrorizing the crappie. I caught them "scheming" up a plan of attack....

The first place I stopped to fish was the only place I fished Thursday morning. I fished 12-17 foot of water long line trolling and the fish were on fire. Thursday afternoon the wind (that we were not supposed to have) dictated where we fished. I fished a bank that was out of the wind in 10-12 fow and kept 12 good fish.....Not bad for a days work.............

On Friday, Talquin Maggie showed up to spend the rest of the weekend fishing with me. The bite slowed down compared to Friday's bite, but we were still able to find some pretty good fish...And a pretty good Gator!!

Saturday was another beautiful day on the water. Some relatives of mine joined me and Talquin Maggie on our search for the fish. The bite was still a little slow but we stumbled up on some good fish in Harvey Mill Creek. But the Ospreys were also hungry. We literally had to stand guard with the net to scare them away when we caught a fish!!! Talquin Maggie had a very close brush with an Osprey. As she was netting a fish for me, an Osprey almost hit her going after the fish right at the back of the boat. I could feel the wind from its wing as is swooped down after the fish and it was within a foot or so from Talquin Maggie. We won and got the fish but the Osprey got tangled up in 2 of the lines out the back of the boat and we had to cut the lines. Fishing lines were wrapped around the birds wing and it couldn't fly. It just floated on the water and kept flapping around!!

It finally got the fishing line off of its wing and flew off to bother somebody else. We went in to eat lunch and clean fish. As we pulled up to the camp, we saw this little fellow:

You don't see these every day but Lake Talquin have a few of these running around.

We spent a couple of hours cleaning fish and realized that we had better fish than what we thought. We had 4 that were over 2 lbs with the biggest being 2 lbs 4 oz. Most all of the females we caught still have not laid out and some were just busting with eggs, With the full moon coming up in a couple of days and the water temp being 70-72, I would suspect these fish will be making a mad dash to the back of the creeks.

The weekend ended with another beautiful Talquin Sunset!!

This has been a terrific crappie season for Talquin Maggie and myself. I hate to see it come to an end but its time to get all the honey do's done and be ready to go when the weather starts cooling back down. Hope to see everyone at the Slabfest at Talquin in November and looking forward to to the Slabfest/Slab Together at Crescent Lake in January!!

Saturday morning in front of goat Island a big gator was right in the middle of the channel. I slowed down and went right by it. I first thought it was a floating log. It never moved. Fishing was a little tough with all the water and muddle. Caught some nice fish Saturday afternoon. I agree, they will be loaded in the pads and looks like a late spawn? As far as the birds around Harveys, it was crazy!!!!!!

We had a discussion about those albino squirrels in my conservation biology class. I saw a group of them in a yard in boyscout. Teacher said that you usually don't see them in a group because there is something wrong with the genetics and because they usually get picked off by predators such as hawks and stuff. Been trying to find a pic of a few of them in a yard to send him.
