Fly Rods: Temple Fork Outfitters (Lefty Kreh Series)is the Best Bang for the Buck without question! Are there cheaper rods? Yes...Are there more expensive rods? Yes... But there are no better Fly Rods for the dollar than the TFO Lefty Kreh Professional Series period! I dare anyone to find one. You can get them for $149 at regular retail price. They have a"Life-Time Warranty" that states they will either fix or replace your rod if you break it... your fault... anybody’s fault... They stand by it. Iknow from experience. The rod has a nice strong backbone with the correct flex in the tip required for tight loops when casting.
The rod weight you choose depends on the species you are targeting. I would not go any stiffer than a 5 weight for bluegill and 4 weight would be my preference if I were to only fish for blue gill or crappie (would be more fun). I chose the 5 weight only because I fish for trout, blue gill and small bass. (5# is a little light for setting the hook on a monster largemouth though, but it is a good all-around rod weight.)
Reel: The fly reel isn't as important in this kind of fishing because its job is to hold the line. You are not reeling in the fish onthe reel, you are pulling the line in... Hobbs Creek @ BPS is a good mid-price range reel that will work fine with the TFO rod.
Once you have used the TFO rod, you don't want to go back using anything else.There is a huge difference in performance and feel with this rod. And if you were wondering, I am NOT associated with TFO, Lefty Kreh, or anyone who sells 'em. I am just a satisfied customer that is glad someone took the time to educate me years ago.

who makes the cabelas brand of fly rods ? Their website lists the Temple Fork brand and then a Three Fork brand as well. Same letters but a marketing game or does Temple make the Three fork rods for Cabelas.
Any opinions on the RLS series, they got a nice price on the (50% off) on this one:

a little more info for you, I bought scientific angler setup $40.00 at a sports store and went on the internet looking for free casting video found one that went step by step on how to cast and all the info on what line to use learned how to cast enjoyed both good luck

Had the redington 5 wt out in the river near wear I live and the rod did great on the hybrid striped bass what a blast on a 5 wt. Caught them from hand size up to 5 lbs. I did order some breathable waders from sierra trading post and the boots from llbean like everyone said I am also thinking that is the way to go instead of neoprene.Since talking about fly gear I have acquired a 10 wt outfit and a 8 wt outfit and two 5 wt outfits. I also been tying jigs clousers streamers and nympths like crazy since buying all of this stuff. Call me nuts but I love to fish.

Reading this thread aggravated an itch I already had, so I went to BPS Saturday and bought a Redington 5wt and some files I saw mentioned on this forum and as soon as I finish painting the kitchen cabinets, I will practice throwing at the dogs in the backyard. Dang honey-does....

been wondering about "how" you practice with a fly rod in the back yard. Just don't tie a lure on, and go at it. I know they have practice plugs for spinning gear, etc., but for fly rods ? I've read where the "line" (such as WF line) is what does the bulk of the work in the distance department as the lures are so light, you won't get much distance.
So, no lure/hook in the back yard?? Does this hurt or damage the line/leader/tippet ???
